Mazarrón Brings the Curtain Down on the ‘The Prado in the Streets’ Exhibition in the Region of Murcia
- The travelling exhibition will be open from 24 July to 6 September, marking the final stop of its tour across five municipalities in the Region.
- Promoted by Fundación Iberdrola España, the exhibition has travelled across numerous Spanish autonomous communities and will continue its journey to other parts of the country.
Mazarrón’s Plaza de las Comunidades Autónomas has been transformed into a large open-air museum until 6 September thanks to the arrival of The Prado in the Streets, the travelling exhibition organised by the Museo Nacional del Prado and Fundación Iberdrola España, in collaboration with the Regional Government of Murcia and the Mazarrón Town Council
With this stop, the exhibition concludes its tour of the Region of Murcia after visiting Cehegín, Murcia, Lorca and San Javier, bringing art and cultural heritage closer to thousands of residents through an accessible, free and inclusive initiative open to all audiences.
The opening ceremony was attended by Ginés Campillo, Mayor of Mazarrón; Carmen María Conesa, Regional Minister for Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia; Fernando Pérez, Management Officer for General Education Coordination at the Prado Museum; Patricio Sánchez López, Director General of Heritage at the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports; Ramón Castresana, Director of Fundación Iberdrola España; and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, the company’s Institutional Delegate in the Region of Murcia.
The exhibition brings together 50 large-format photographic reproductions of some of the most iconic works from the Prado Museum’s collection. It offers visitors a journey through the major European artistic schools guided by great masters such as Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, Bosch, Caravaggio, Titian and Sorolla, among others.
Each work is accompanied by accessible explanatory texts and labels that help visitors understand who painted the artwork, the story it tells and its significance. In this way, the exhibition also becomes an educational experience for people of all ages. In addition, to enrich the visit, every bilingual information panel includes QR codes providing access to additional content on the Prado Museum’s collections.
Since its launch, The Prado in the Streets has established itself as one of the most successful cultural outreach initiatives of the Museo Nacional del Prado and Fundación Iberdrola España, travelling through numerous Spanish municipalities with the aim of democratising access to culture and bringing universal art to new audiences. In the Region of Murcia, the project has transformed squares, promenades and urban spaces into genuine open-air galleries, encouraging encounters between residents and visitors and some of the most representative masterpieces in the history of painting.
Fundación Iberdrola España, a Patron Member of the Prado Museum
Fundación Iberdrola España develops one of its main areas of activity around the preservation and enhancement of Spain’s cultural and artistic heritage. It has collaborated with the Prado Museum since 2010, supporting the museum’s conservation and restoration programmes as well as funding four annual scholarships for young conservators.
In 2019, the Foundation also joined the Extraordinary Programme for the Commemoration of the Prado Museum’s Bicentenary. Following its success, this travelling exhibition was launched across Spain and has now visited a total of 61 municipalities.
Since 2011, Fundación Iberdrola España has invested a total of €13 million in its Art and Culture programme. This area focuses on initiatives such as its Lighting Programme, which includes the design, implementation and funding of artistic lighting projects for landmark buildings and cultural heritage monuments, as well as its Restoration Programme, which supports the conservation workshops of leading museums in preserving their artistic and pictorial heritage.
In the Region of Murcia, notable projects include the lighting of Cartagena Town Hall, the Basilica of Vera Cruz and its surrounding walls in Caravaca de la Cruz, as well as institutional collaborations with the Roman Theatre Museum Foundation of Cartagena since 2015 and the Salzillo Museum since 2013.
