  • This event opens a nationwide programme of illuminations of iconic buildings and monuments to be conducted by the company during 2026
  • Innovative LED technology has been employed to enhance the interior of one of Spain’s most important cultural heritage treasures, officially appointed as Site of Cultural Interest

Iberdrola has launched the programme of activities commemorating its 125th anniversary with the renewal of the lighting system of the Royal Palace Chapel in Madrid, one of the most important treasures of Spain’s historical and artistic heritage.

The new lighting installation was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Iberdrola Spain Foundation, Jaime Alfonsín, together with the President of Patrimonio Nacional, Ana de la Cueva.

This initiative marks the commencement of a nationwide programme of illuminations of emblematic buildings and monuments that the company will implement throughout Spain in 2026. Planned sites include, among others, the Miguelete Tower in Valencia, Valladolid City Hall, the cathedrals of Albacete and Málaga, the Roman Theatre of Mérida, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Begoña in Bilbao.

The Royal Palace Chapel is distinguished by its outstanding architectural and artistic richness, featuring frescoes, sculptures, and ornamental elements of significant historical value. As the setting for solemn ceremonies and official court events, it makes up a living testament to the history of Spain and the Monarchy. Accessed from the main gallery of the Royal Palace, it forms part of one of the few official residences of heads of state open to the public, welcoming approximately 1.5 million visitors each year from around the world.

This project is the result of a collaboration agreement between Iberdrola and Patrimonio Nacional and underscores the value of public–private partnerships in the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, as well as in the promotion of cultural tourism through innovative initiatives.

The intervention covers the main nave and adjoining spaces, including the reliquary and the sacristy, where new state‑of‑the‑art LED lighting systems have been installed. These systems reduce energy consumption by 94% and fully follow the heritage, architectural and aesthetic requirements of the site. As a result, the overall beauty of the Royal Chapel is enhanced through an efficient and sustainable solution, seamlessly integrated into the monument.
