The travelling exhibition ‘El Prado en las Calles’ arrives in Lorca
- Calle Corredera will host, from 14 May to 14 June, the most representative works of the Museo del Prado, for the enjoyment of residents and visitors who wish to discover the great masterpieces of the gallery
- Since 2019, this exhibition, promoted by Fundación Iberdrola España, has travelled across numerous areas of the country and will conclude its journey through the Region of Murcia in San Javier
Lorca has s been transformed into a true open-air museum thanks to the arrival of ‘El Prado en las Calles’, an exhibition that brings some of the most famous paintings from the Museo Nacional del Prado directly to Calle Corredera, at the level of Plaza de la Concordia. It is an ideal proposal for families, school groups, young people, and seniors who wish to discover or rediscover the great works of the gallery in a comfortable and free way.
The exhibition features 50 life-size reproductions of great masterpieces in the history of painting, created by renowned artists such as Velázquez, Goya, Bosch, Rubens, and El Greco. The images, installed on large-format panels, allow viewers to closely observe details and scenes that are usually only visible inside a museum.
Each work is accompanied by simple explanatory texts and labels that help visitors understand who painted the piece, what story it tells, and why it is important. In this way, the exhibition also becomes an educational experience for people of all ages. Furthermore, in order to enrich the visit, each bilingual information panel includes QR codes providing access to additional content on the different collections of the Museo del Prado.
The opening ceremony was attended by Fulgencio Gil Jódar, Mayor of Lorca; Patricio Sánchez López, Director General of Heritage of the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia; Fernando Pérez Suescun, Management Technician of the General Coordination of Education at the Museo del Prado; as well as Ramón Castresana, director of Fundación Iberdrola España, and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, the company’s institutional delegate in the region.
‘El Prado en las Calles’ invites visitors to pause, look carefully, and be surprised, offering them the opportunity to travel through time thanks to the most influential painting schools of Western art, including the Spanish, Flemish, German, Dutch, French, and Italian schools.
For Fulgencio Gil Jódar, Mayor of Lorca, this is “a unique opportunity for art and painting lovers, as well as society as a whole, to enjoy up close some of the most well-known and representative works of the capital’s gallery, reinforcing this City Council’s commitment to bringing culture into the streets and closer to citizens.”
Fulgencio added that it is no coincidence that Lorca “has been chosen as one of the main venues for this wonderful travelling exhibition, which could also be enjoyed as part of the Museum Night programme, with thousands of people viewing great works from all periods. I would like to thank Fundación Iberdrola España, the Directorate-General for Heritage, and the General Coordination of Education of the Museo del Prado for making it possible and for joining the Lorca Government’s commitment to bringing culture closer to citizens and bringing artistic life into the streets and squares.”
Ramón Castresana, director of Fundación Iberdrola España, stated that this exhibition “is part of the Foundation’s commitment to spreading knowledge and enhancing cultural heritage, ensuring that art reaches citizens in an open, educational, and accessible way.”
Castresana also emphasized that collaboration with leading cultural institutions “is key to developing projects with a positive and lasting social impact,” and took the opportunity to recall Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary and its wide range of activities across Spain.
