Cehegín hosts the open‑air exhibition El Prado en las Calles
- From 6 March to 12 April, the Jardín del Convento will showcase some of the most emblematic works from the Prado Museum for the enjoyment of Cehegín residents and all visitors who wish to discover this exhibition
- Since 2019, this exhibition, promoted by Fundación Iberdrola España, has travelled to numerous locations across the country and will continue its tour throughout the Region of Murcia in municipalities such as Murcia, Lorca and San Javier
Starting today and until 12 April, residents of Cehegín and visitors alike will be able to view 50 large‑format photographic reproductions of some of the most iconic works from the Museo Nacional del Prado. Universal masters such as Goya, Velázquez, Rubens, Dürer, Rembrandt, Bosch, Caravaggio and Sorolla are represented in this exhibition thanks to the collaboration between the Prado Museum, Fundación Iberdrola España, and the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports of the Region of Murcia.
To enrich the visitor experience, each bilingual information panel includes QR codes providing access to additional content about the museum’s collections.
The opening event was attended by Alicia del Amor, Mayor of Cehegín; María Muñoz, Director‑General for Youth of the Region of Murcia; Ana Moreno, General Education Coordinator of the Prado Museum; as well as Jaime Alfonsín, President of Fundación Iberdrola España; Ramón Castresana, its director; and Miguel Cerdán, the company’s institutional delegate in the region, among others, including representatives of the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Maravillas.
For Mayor Alicia del Amor, “it is a great joy to host an exhibition like El Prado en las Calles. The opportunity to admire such important works in an open space like the Jardín del Convento is something truly worth experiencing. We wanted this exhibition to be part of the programme for the Jubilee Year celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Virgen de las Maravillas to our town, because we are living a very special year and we want culture to play a leading role.”
The Mayor expressed her gratitude to Fundación Iberdrola España, the Prado Museum and the Regional Ministry “for making it possible and for choosing Cehegín. I invite all residents and visitors to walk through the gardens, stop before each artwork and enjoy this experience.”
According to Jaime Alfonsín, this initiative demonstrates how “Fundación Iberdrola España maintains its strong commitment to bringing art and culture closer to the public by bringing them into squares and open spaces, so citizens can encounter the heritage of one of the most important museums in the world.” He also invited everyone “to walk through this exhibition, stop in front of each work and enjoy this open‑air museum that comes to life today in Cehegín.”
The President of Fundación Iberdrola España also recalled that this year marks the company’s 125th anniversary, and that it will bring a variety of activities across Spain for the enjoyment of all.
Following the opening ceremony, catalogues from the Prado Museum were presented to the documentary collections of the Cehegín Municipal Library, and attendees were invited to explore the exhibition and enjoy masterpieces from the major Western art schools — Flemish, Italian, French, German, Dutch and Spanish — featured in this collection.
Since its launch in Spain in 2019, El Prado en las Calles has attracted large audiences across various regions including Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Andalusia and the Valencian Community. In total, the exhibition has visited 58 municipalities.
125 years of history and commitment
Iberdrola is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year with an extensive programme of activities across Spain under the slogan 125 años luz — a phrase that evokes both the company’s historic transformation and its future vision.
Throughout the year, the company will present a wide agenda that includes technology and art exhibitions, music festivals, social events and the artistic lighting of iconic buildings, with the aim of sharing this celebration with employees, customers, shareholders and society as a whole.
Fundación Iberdrola España, Protector Member of the Prado Museum
One of the Foundation’s core areas of activity focuses on the preservation and promotion of Spain’s cultural and artistic heritage. It has collaborated with the Prado Museum since 2010 by supporting its conservation and restoration programmes, as well as by funding four annual scholarships for young restorers.
In 2019, the Foundation joined the Extraordinary Programme to commemorate the Prado Museum’s Bicentenary, and following its success, helped launch this travelling exhibition across Spain.
Since 2011, Fundación Iberdrola España has allocated a total of 13 million euros to its Art and Culture area, which includes programmes such as the Lighting Programme — dedicated to the design, execution and funding of artistic lighting projects in listed buildings and monuments — and the Restoration Programme, which supports the conservation workshops of leading museums to help preserve their artistic and pictorial heritage.
In the Region of Murcia, notable projects include the lighting of the Basílica de la Vera Cruz and its surrounding walls in Caravaca de la Cruz, as well as institutional collaborations with the Fundación Teatro Romano de Cartagena since 2015 and the Museo Salzillo since 2013.
