Fundación Iberdrola España renews its commitment to the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation

  • The two organizations have been working together for more than a decade, promoting exhibitions, workshops, courses, and conferences, among other initiatives.
  • This agreement forms part of the numerous activities planned throughout this year to commemorate Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary.

Fundación Iberdrola España has renewed its collaboration agreement with the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation to continue supporting its various cultural, scientific, and educational outreach programmes.

The signing ceremony was attended by Elena Ruiz, Managing Director of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation; Jaime Alfonsín, Chairman of Fundación Iberdrola España; and Miguel Ángel Cerdán, Iberdrola’s Institutional Delegate in the Region of Murcia.

The two foundations have been working together since 2015. For Fundación Iberdrola España, this agreement highlights the importance of supporting organizations that safeguard the country’s historical and cultural heritage, such as the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation, to which it has allocated approximately €200,000 over more than a decade of collaboration.

According to Elena Ruiz, Managing Director of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation, “our collaboration with Fundación Iberdrola España over all these years has been extremely positive and smooth. We are therefore deeply grateful for its constant support of the Museum’s activities. We have always felt its backing and genuine interest in our initiatives and in our outstanding monumental complex, and from the Museum we would like to congratulate Iberdrola on its 125th anniversary.”

For Jaime Alfonsín, Chairman of Fundación Iberdrola España, this new agreement “reaffirms our shared commitment to promoting and supporting initiatives that generate a positive and sustainable impact on society, particularly in Cartagena. This collaboration strengthens our determination to join forces, share knowledge and work together to promote wellbeing, and it complements the recent signing of an agreement with the City Council for the lighting of the City Hall Palace.”

About the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation

The Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation was created to implement and develop the comprehensive Roman Theatre project, as well as to ensure its continuity through the management of the Museum and visits to the monumental complex, while also fostering, promoting, and developing the cultural activity associated with the Roman Theatre.

Last year’s results were positive, with a total of 254,474 visitors recorded, reflecting increased participation in cultural and educational activities and a strong presence of both national and international audiences.

‘125 Years at the Speed of Light’: a wide-ranging programme for society as a whole

This agreement forms part of the extensive and varied programme designed for 2026 to mark the 125th anniversary of Iberdrola’s founding. The programme includes art exhibitions, music festivals, technology highlights, and social events.

Under the slogan ‘125 Years at the Speed of Light’, the company will roll out initiatives aimed at employees, customers, shareholders and the general public, bringing its legacy closer to society as a whole and, above all, conveying its vision, future outlook and strong commitment to the communities in which it operates.

Iberdrola’s commitment to the promotion of art and culture

One of Iberdrola’s principal areas of action, through its foundation in Spain, focuses on the care, conservation, and enhancement of historical and artistic heritage. In the Region of Murcia, in addition to its institutional collaboration with the Roman Theatre of Cartagena Foundation, it has also supported the Salzillo Museum since 2013.

Also noteworthy is Fundación Iberdrola España’s Lighting Programme, which recently inaugurated the ornamental external lighting of the Basilica of the Vera Cruz and its surrounding walls in Caravaca de la Cruz. This site enjoys perpetual Jubilee status as one of the five Christian pilgrimage destinations (Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, and Caravaca de la Cruz).
