Fundación Iberdrola España and Valencia City Council have signed a collaboration agreement to install charging points to meet the needs of electric boats operating in the l’Albufera Natural Park.
The presentation event, held at the Trilladora del Tocaio, was attended by the Mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá, and the Chairman of Fundación Iberdrola España, Jaime Alfonsín, who formalized the agreement on energy sustainability. The agreement will enable the installation of eight charging points in the districts of El Palmar and El Saler and will involve an investment of more than €180,000, funded by the foundation.
This collaboration reaffirms the commitment of both organizations to actively contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as to the responsible management of natural resources within the Natural Park. It will also support the process of declaring l’Albufera a Biosphere Reserve.
The mayor expressed her appreciation for the support of Fundación Iberdrola España, describing it as “a strategic partner on the path towards decarbonization and energy efficiency, as well as in the promotion and enhancement of our cultural, historical and artistic heritage.”
For his part, Jaime Alfonsín highlighted that, through this agreement, “the foundation strengthens its collaboration on sustainable initiatives aimed at preserving the environmental, landscape and ecological values of the l’Albufera Natural Park, underlining the importance of responsibility in safeguarding our natural heritage and promoting a development model that is respectful of the environment.”
The event was also attended by councilors from Valencia City Council, local district mayors, as well as Iberdrola’s Institutional Delegate in the Region of Valencia, Ibán Molina, and the company’s Commercial Delegate in the region, Joaquín Longares.
The agreement provides for the installation of eight charging points, each with an output of forty-four kilowatts (kW) and dual connectors, enabling up to sixteen boats to be charged simultaneously. Five of the charging stations will be located in El Palmar and the remaining three in El Saler.
Collaboration with Valencia
Through this agreement, Fundación Iberdrola España demonstrates its ongoing support for the city of Valencia. This initiative adds to other recent agreements signed by the foundation for the lighting of Valencia Cathedral, the Miguelete Tower and the Palau de la Música. In addition, the foundation has collaborated on the lighting of the Chapel of the Holy Chalice, the restoration of the tapestries of the Church of El Patriarca, the Boil family tomb in the former Convent of Santo Domingo, and the arrival of the travelling exhibition “El Prado in the Streets.”
The Foundation’s Commitment to the Environment and Biodiversity
Fundación Iberdrola España is also carrying out other biodiversity projects in the Region of Valencia, including the reintroduction of the osprey in collaboration with Fundación Migres since 2022. The aim of this programme is to reintroduce and restore this endangered bird of prey, which disappeared from the region more than 50 years ago.
The project involves obtaining young ospreys from donor countries such as Scotland and subsequently transferring them to the Region of Valencia, specifically to the Marjal de Pego-Oliva Natural Park. The chicks are then cared for and fed using the “hacking” or field-rearing method until they reach adulthood and can be released to begin their migratory journey to Africa.
This programme continues across the region, including in l’Albufera, following the signing of a second agreement with Fundación Migres in 2025. Under this agreement, new infrastructure such as nests and enclosures is being installed in preparation for the arrival of new specimens of this species in 2027.
In addition, Fundación Iberdrola España has actively collaborated with the Rei Jaume I Awards since 2010, acting as sponsor of the Environmental Protection Award.
